When you invest in a set of high-end furniture or a beautiful piece of artwork, it’s important to take the steps to maintain and care for it. Artwork gets framed and dusted, and furniture gets vacuumed and polished. But one thing you might not have considered is the damage sunlight can do.

What kind of damage does sunlight do?

It’s tempting to place your valued items in a room with lots of sunlight, because there’s nothing better than natural light to bring out the natural beauty of the colors in your art, furniture or rugs. But that same sunlight also contains harmful UV rays that can cause those colors to fade and become drab or dreary. Eventually, the items you love will literally pale in comparison to how they looked when you bought them. Even the paint on your walls can suffer fading from sunlight.

How can I prevent fading?

Green Light Window Films add a UV barrier that eliminates 99 percent of UV rays. This lets the beautifying effects of the light shine on your items without the damaging effects of unfiltered sunlight. Green Light Window Films allows you to protect your investments and significantly decrease redecorating costs when it comes to rugs, furniture and wall paint, which will need replacement far less often.

Do Green Light Window Films offer other benefits?

They sure do! Green Light Window Films also reduce glare on your computer screens and televisions, and just as they protect your home décor and furnishings, they also protect your skin from harmful UV rays. For more information, come see us at our store in Lee’s Summit, visit our website, or give us a call at 816.388.9362.

At Green Light Window Films we believe in our products and services because we believe in living a sustainable lifestyle. Our products emphasize energy conservation, home protection and automotive safety. But the “green” approach to living doesn’t stop there. There are many ways to conserve energy and promote sustainability with just our own behaviors and attitudes.

Love your Sweaters and T-shirts!

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs. Window film can help with this as it eliminates heat and cooling loss. You can also install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out. Wash your clothes in cold water, 85% of the energy used to wash clothes goes to heating the water. Your clothes won’t mind the chill.

Showering With the Oldies!

Install a low-flow shower-head, they’re inexpensive and your savings will quickly pay for it. Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills as well. So tune that shower radio to the oldies station, the songs are notably short, so after one Buddy Holly and a Simon and Garfunkel you’re done! Avoid “Stairway to Heaven” or you may be late for work!

Love-handles to Handle-bars!

Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity. More and more cities are adding bike lanes so dust off that Schwinn. Or take the bus; it’s a great way to get caught up on work, read that vampire novel or get to know people you might not meet otherwise.

Where’s the Beef?

Eat smart, eat healthy. Go meatless once a week. Meat production is expensive from feed costs to land use to transportation so substitute a hearty veggie soup or salad. It’s also better for your health to reduce animal fats consumption. Buy local whenever possible to support your local economy and reduce the carbon emissions from transporting groceries from afar.

Beg, Borrow and Steal. Or At Least Ask First.

Borrow from libraries instead of buying books or movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books. If you really like that new Stephen King then buy it but reading it first eliminates that buyer’s regret. This is also a great reason to get to know your neighbors and be nice to your friends. Sharing tools, appliances and know-how keeps you from a purchase you may only use once (which is why there’s an electric sander still in the box in your basement) or from a hazardous home repair because you “thought” you could do it.

Relax, the New iPhone Will Be New Again.

Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible. Sure it’s fun to have the latest gadget but seriously, do you even use half the fancy features on the one you have now? When they finally bite the dust be sure and donate or recycle them responsibly. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem. Many major stores offer electronic recycling programs either ongoing or several times a year. Cell phones can often be refurbished and many carriers donate them to low-income families or organizations.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Blue to Clean your Windows.

Remember soap? It actually cleans just fine. Or make your own cleaning solutions with baking soda, vinegar or even lemons. They’re safe, non-toxic and when you’re done you can use on a salad. Ok, not really. But you’ll also be green when you don’t use brand packaging, plastic bottles or even the gas used to bring them home. And if you run low, just mix up another batch!

Sustainability can start simply. By just changing a few behaviors we can reduce our environmental impact and contribute to keeping our little earth around a little bit longer. Green Light Window Film is committed not only to great products and customer service but to environmental conservation and better energy use. Call us today to learn more!

Green Light Window Film blocks UV rays, prevents heat loss and reflects the sun's rays. This means we can enjoy the sun, protect our valuables and contribute to a more sustainable environment by using less energy.

Furnishing, flooring and valuables need protection from fading caused by sunlight.

Whether you live in a southern climate, bathed by warm breezes, a bright sun and moderate temperatures, or a more northerly region with multi-colored fall, frigid winters and humid summers we all like a window that lets us see the world. There’s nothing better than a sunrise with a good cup of coffee, seeing our children play in the yard with a garden hose or even watching a snowstorm as it slowly makes it way across the mountains. Windows allow us to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors even if it’s 15 degrees or 99 and that’s always good news!

The Downside to Sunlight

But here’s the not-so-good news. As new home construction began incorporating larger windows and sunrooms have been added to existing homes, fading of furniture, flooring and even artwork has become an issue. And while the sun fills our rooms its UV radiation is also responsible for 40% of the fading of a home’s interior furnishings and floors. This is especially true during the winter months when the sun is on an increasingly southern trek resulting in more direct light coming into our homes. So while we love and need sunlight we don’t love the thought of reinvesting in expensive furnishings and even the thrift stores don’t want our half-red, half-dark pink sofa sets.

Caring for our sentimental property can be even more important to us than what we purchase. For all of us seeking to preserve valuable artwork there are many more Grandmas who don’t want little Jason’s macaroni dog to cook on the front of the fridge. And the Shaker dining room table that was a wedding gift is simply irreplaceable. So what’s a sun-lover to do?

Let The Sun Shine!

Window treatments can help but we don’t always want our windows covered and those expensive treatments themselves can become victims of sun exposure. Mini-blinds are functional but not always the most attractive option and keeping them clean can be a chore. The happiest solution is window film for a number of reasons. Green Light Window Film blocks 99% of UV rays, 25% of heat loss and 25% of the visible light from an uncovered window while also reflecting 80% of the sun’s rays. This means we can enjoy the sun, protect our valuables and contribute to a more sustainable environment as we control heat loss and use less energy to maintain a comfortable home setting.

At a Capitol Hill press conference on April 14, 2010, congressional leaders unveiled a House version of federal legislation that would authorize creation of the HOME STAR energy retrofit program already under consideration in the Senate. The bipartisan Home Star Energy Retrofit Act of 2010 was introduced by the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.

Introduction of the House bill marks a significant step toward passage of the HOME STAR legislation, which was designed to create 168,000 new jobs in construction and related industries and help Americans save on their energy bills. The HOME STAR proposal is gaining support nationally, with legislators on both sides of the aisle expressing support for the plan.
